Liv Boeree Wins PokerStars Sunday Warm-Up

Liv BoereeDespite the Superbowl, Sunday was yet another action-packed day at the PokerStars tables. The Sunday Warm-Up which has a weekly guaranteed prize pool of $750,000 attracted 4,710 players, including several Team PokerStars Pro’s, with Liv Boeree managing to claim victory for $147,780. This is her first victory since joining PokerStars in January after leaving UB and with such talent it will surely be the first of many. Boeree used Twitter to update her followers throughout the tournament and had lots of support in the chat box, to which she was very grateful and thanked everyone after her win.

With 25 players left in the tournament, Boeree was joined by three other Team PokerStars Pro’s as Pieter De Korver, Daniel ‘KidPoker’ Negreanu and Marcin ‘Goral’ Horecki all made it deep. Pieter De Korver was the first of them to be eliminated after he found himself all-in holding KK against DNA2RNA’s AQ when the board ran 52AJ7, earning him a 24th place finish for $2,345.

The next of them to be eliminated was Daniel ‘KidPoker’ Negreanu, just five hands after De Korver. Negreanu found himself all-in preflop holding 77 against Cod Meharly’s A10. The flop of 6QK looked dangerous for Negreanu’s pocket sevens, and the turn of J sealed his fate leaving him drawing dead and eliminated in 22nd place for $2,345, while Boeree and Horecki strolled through to the final table.

Horecki didn’t last long at the final table though as he found himself involved in a huge three-way pot with Bjoerni89 and Cod Meharly. Horecki moved all-in (holding AQ), then Cod Meharly shoved for the rest of his stack (holding JJ), with Bjoerni89 calling (holding AA) and having both players covered. The board ran 24683 to give Bjoerni89 the 16.6 million pot. This meant Horecki was out in 8th place for $11,775 due to having the least chips at the beginning of the pot, and Cod Meharly was eliminated in 7th place for $21,195.

Boeree and James ‘mig’ Mackey (a SCOOP, WCOOP, and WSOP Champion) then dominated the final table eliminating several players each to set up a heads-up battle, and a battle it certainly was. Usually when play gets down to heads-up in such a large poker tournament the heads-up action only lasts for a few hands, but this pair battled it out for over an hour before a winner prevailed.

On the final hand of the tournament Boeree held 28 million chips to Mackey’s 18 million, and the players got all-in preflop. Boeree held 77 while Mackey held A6 and was in desperate need of an Ace to double-up and have the chip advantage, however the board ran 5Q95Q to seal the win for Team PokerStars Pro Liv Boeree.
