Kalmuka Wins 3/20/11 PokerStars Sunday Million

PokerStars.comThe PokerStars Sunday Million on March 20th had a $1.5 million guarantee, which ensured there was going to be a good turn out. With 9,594 players it created a prize pool of $1,918,800.00 for the top 1,440 finishers.

It was a solid day of poker with a number of Team PokerStars Pros making the cash. The last Team Pro standing was Switzerland’s Anton Allemann, though he finished in 13th place, just missing the final table.

It didn’t take long for the field to get whittled down, with plenty of all ins. David_Wain decided to make his move from the big blind with Ah-Qh on the bubble, and original raiser kalmuka showed with Ac-2c. The board came 8-Q-3-4-5 to give kalmuka the runner-runner straight, and David_Wain exited in tenth place.

The final table was reached during Level 35, with the blinds set at 150,000/300,000 and 30,000 ante. The starting chip counts for the players at the final table were as follows:

Seat 1: XBraumeister (10,977,808 in chips)
Seat 2: IkBenEenBaas (9,741,476 in chips)
Seat 3: BlackMojos (5,613,327 in chips)
Seat 4: upstrick77 (19,865,213 in chips)
Seat 5: dickkemp (3,741,434 in chips)
Seat 6: kalmuka (13,065,720 in chips)
Seat 7: Mr_BigQueso (18,893,216 in chips)
Seat 8: PureCash25 (5,533,184 in chips)
Seat 9: SeraphimV (8,508,622 in chips)

When action at the final table got underway, Kalmuka started strong but lost quite a few chips after doubling up dickkemp. But upstrick was set on taking the lead back and did it by taking a 10 million-chip pot from Mr_BigQueso.

PureCash25, who was short stacked had been looking for a hand and eventually decided that K-J in the small blind was good enough to move all in with. SeraphimV called from the big blind with a dominating K-Q, and that kicker held up to knock out PureCash25 in ninth place for $13,047.84.

A few hands later, Mr_BigQueso made his move, this time with A-T. SeraphimV was the caller again with pocket queens, and when the flop came down Q-6-3 SeraphimV was all but drawing dead, exiting in eighth place with $19,188.00.

Kalmuka gained momentum, starting with a 15.2 million chip pot against IkBenEenBaas. A short while after, XBraumeister opened and kalmuka three-bet shoved from the big blind to bully the smaller stack. XBraumeister called the all-in for around 9 million with A-J. Kalmuka showed Kd-6d and the 5c-7h-8s-4d-3c board gave Kalmuka the straight. XBraumeister was eliminated in seventh place.

Play resumed after there was a break to discuss a 6-way deal. When play commenced, everyone was playing a little more cautiously until Upstrick77 was all-in with K-J. SeraphimV made the call with A-Q. The board run out T-3-5-J-K and SeraphimV improved to a straight. Upstrick77 was down and out in sixth place with $135,354.39.

BlackMojos was on the move after he doubled through SeraphimV and when Dickkemp pushed all-in with A-4, BlackMojos woke up with Q-Q, which improved to a set by the river. Dickkemp was knocked out in fifth place, and that hand put BlackMojos in second place.

IkBenEenBaas was then eliminated in fourth place with $108,438.49 after his two pair on the flop was counterfeited on the river.

A short stacked SeraphimV risked the remainder of his chips with pocket tens, and kalmuka called with A-J. The board ran out A-2-5-J-3 to give kalmuka a pair of jacks. That meant that SeraphimV was gone this time in third place, who previously finished second in a 2009 Sunday Million and fifth in the same tournament in 2010.

The heads-up play was between BlackMojos with 64490288 in chips and kalmuka with 31449712 in chips. Kalmuka was patient and  found a double-up spot with pocket aces, against his opponent’s A-T. That double put kalmuka in the lead at that point, but both stacks were still fairly even.

After 30 minutes into the heads-up match, with stacks still nearly even, kalmuka managed to double up with 6-4 offsuit against BlackMojos’ A-K. That pot was worth nearly 94.5 million and left BlackMojos crippled. He had no choice but to move all in with 9-3. Kalmuka called with 3-2 and hit a pair of deuces to win the March 20 Sunday Million, walking away with $234,574.03 and the title.
